Banned Baby Names

Limits to Personal Freedom

Symbols and numerals image
Across the world, baby names have been banned. In New Zealand the government has banned several baby names because they are not appropriate. The government posted a list of names that parents can not name their children. The writer, Kim Kyle states, " New Zealand released an official list of rejected names on Wednesday".  The government also banned any names that "might imply a child holds an official tittle or rank" (Kyle). Such names as princess and  duke were forbidden. There is an entire list of name that the government regents because they are offensive according to them.

The government has limit the citizens personal freedom because they are banning baby names. Parents have the right to name their child the names they decide. The government should not intervene in the situation. Parents have personal freedoms that should not be limited when it comes to deciding the name of their child.  The government  should respect  the parents decision because it is not harming others. Parents can get as creative as they want because it is their choice to determine the name of their newborn.

On the other hand, the government says that some of the names that parents chose are offensive so they must be banned. The author, Kim Kyle states, "In some cases parent appeared to have lost inspiration for coming up with a moniker for their offspring, naming the family's latest edition simply "2nd", "3rd", or "5th"". This are some of the names that the government has blocked because according to them, it is offensive. However, the names mention are not offensive and they are not harming others. They are unique but they are definitely not offensive. Overall, parents should not be limited to determine the name of their baby.

Personal Freedom

Personal Freedom

What is Personal Freedom?

Personal freedom is "freedom of the person in going and coming, equality before the courts, security of private property, freedom of opinion and its expression, and freedom of conscience subject to the rights of others and of the public" as stated by the Merriam Webster dictionary.

In other words, personal freedoms are the right that humans have to be able to express themselves and have opinions without having a higher power authority limiting their freedom. However, there has been a conflict between how much personal freedom a person must have until the government has to interfere. In many cases, people abuse their freedoms and it harms others in our society. There has been many doubts whether the government should draw a limit or it should not interfere at all.

There are many circumstances when people abuse their power of bearing guns. The 2nd amendment protects a persons' right to keep and bear arms yet many people do not use it properly. There has been many cases of people that use their guns to harm others. For example, there has been many shooting at schools that has harmed many students. For example an article stated, "Twenty students, ages 6 and 7, and six adults were killed at the school"(CNN). This clearly demonstrates that each day, innocent people are being killed due to the people that do not use their personal freedom properly.

However, many people believe that not everyone overuses their right to bear arms yet, there has been many cases that people use their guns in an improper manner. Some people say that government should interfere because the use of guns is causing harm to society and each day the rate of massacres is increasing. There has been a conflict between whether the government should interfere or not take action. The issue has caught everyone's attention because there are many other factors that contribute to the use of the second amendment.

Lets Analyze Ads!!!

When it comes to analyzing ads, the audience, purpose, use of rhetorical devices help determine if it is effective. There are many ads that catch attention by the techniques that are used to make it stand out. Here are some ads that can be analyzed to see their effectiveness.

Audience: The audience would be consumers of soda
Purpose: The purpose is to create awareness of the harm that soda can cause
Rhetorical Devices:
Logos--It has facts of the diseases that soda causes
Ethos-- It is a reliable source because it from NYC Health and it has a webpage to visit for more information
Pathos--It impacts emotionally because it shows all the sugar packets that are being poured in the soda which is shocking for the audience.
Effectiveness: This ad is effective because it contains facts and it makes the important details stand out. The large font it used to say how much packs of sugar catches our attention because it is a bright pink color and the background is a solid white color to make the more important details stand out.

Audience: Women
Purpose: The purpose is to encourage women to buy the L'Oreal "Volume Million Lashes" Mascara
Rhetorical Devices:
Logos: It says that the mascara will make eyelashes 3X thicker and add volume
Ethos: The ad build trust because it uses the actress Eva Longoria to show that the mascara works.
Effectiveness: It is effective because Eva Longoria is promoting the mascara and the phrase "become a millionaire" has a connection with the actress since she is wealthy and it encourages the audience to buy the brand since wealthy people use it. It is also effective because the mascara is gold which symbolizes money and it stands out due to the contrast it has with the half black background.

Audience: Consumers
Purpose: Persuade the public to consume coke
Rhetorical Analysis:
Ethos-- Coca-Cola Company
Pathos-- It compares coke with happiness which makes the audience feel comfortable
Logos-- The background makes it look peaceful with the sun shining which creates happiness

Ethos, Logos & Pathos

Rhetorical Analysis is the way that someone analyzes a source such as a document or picture in different ways. Different techniques are utilized to make the document or picture or even an ad more effective and appealing to the audience. Some of the tools that make it more effective are the use of ethos, logos and pathos.

ETHOS

Ethos is the credibility of a source or of an author; the authority that they have.
Some examples are demonstrated in the following ads:

This ad is a great example of ethos because it is using the dentist to make the ad more reliable. Using the testimony of the dentist to prove that the Colgate toothbrush is the best one makes the audience trust the brand. Using the dentist to say that Colgate is the number one brand recommended builds trust between the audience and the brad since it has been recommended by a respectable person.

This ad also uses ethos to make their purpose more effective because  it is using expert testimony to make it believable. The use of expert testimony make the audience believe that it really work and including the name of the company, Subway, makes the source credible.

LOGOS

Logos is logic and persuading by using claims such as facts and statistics.
Here are some examples:

This ad uses logos successfully because it lists all the consequences that smoking can cause. The ad wants to prevent people from smoking since it is stating the negative effects of smoking. The use of logos is clearly noticed because the ad  list logical facts by bullet point such as the bullets that a gun has which makes a clear comparison that proves that this is a logos appeal.

This ad uses logos to appeal to its audience because it is using logical facts to support its purpose. The fact that bicycles do not have bumpers is realistic and it makes the audience realize that bicyclists are in great danger.

PATHOS

Pathos is persuading trough the use of emotions
Here are some examples:

This ad is a perfect example of the use of pathos. The first thing that catches the eye, is the little boys tears and the fear in his eyes. This make the ad emotional since it is showing a little boy that is suffering which can make the audience feel sympathy for the boy. The hand that is choking the boy symbolizes all the hurtful words that has been said to him and that it is effecting him negatively. This also creates a sad feeling and it is clear that the ad uses ethos to appeal to its audience.

The use of pathos in this ad is present by the emotion in the baby's face. The ad makes the audience feel sorrow for the baby and its encouraging them to take action as soon as possible because it is saying that the baby can die before you can get to work. The use of emotional appeal is utilized to convince the audience.

Gender Roles

Why are girls and boys limited?

Girls:

Since an early age, girls are exposed to the things that they should and should not do. Since childhood, girls learn how to be accepted into a society that observes every single detail and make judgments based on the definition of a girl. Here is a short list that describes a girl:
  • Play with dolls
  • Like princesses
  • Like arts and crafts
  • Like sparkly things
  • Be sensible
  • Be weak
  • Wear pink
This are only some of the many things that a "normal" girl should do and like according to society. Stereotyping girls into a certain category is becoming more common because since an early age, girls are taught this things and as they grow up, they view it as a normal thing. Because girls are being exposed to certain things, when they grow up, they tend to do things similar to the activities they did when they were little. According to society, girls are support to be sensible and cry for no reasons. A huge label that girls have is that they are viewed as weak. Even at a professional standard, women are only allowed to have certain types of jobs. Just think about it? How many women work as mechanics, electricians or construction workers? Not many and if they do, its really rare. The reason is that if a women does this type of work, they will be viewed in a strange way since they are a minority. This are some of the reasons why women are limited to do certain things since they practically grew up with that perspective of women. Action must be taken on order to eliminate the idea that women are only allowed to do certain things.

Boys:

Boys also have certain roles that are set by society. From an early age they have certain expectations of the things they should and shouldn't do. Some of the things that boys are expected to do are the following:
  • Be emotionless
  • Be strong
  • Play with cars
  • Don't cry
  • Wear blue
  • Like sports
Society expects boys to be strong in order to fit in the definition of a men. A boy is supposed to act a certain way in order to be respected. For example, they are not support to be sensible. In other words they are forbidden from crying because that can mean that they are vulnerable and sensible. A boy is supposed to play with toys such as cars. Society has formed the wrong concepts of the way men should act because they focus more on the way that things used to be years ago. Society has changed and now men can be able to do many other things and not only certain things that are set by society. For instance, men are perfectly capable of cooking, cleaning, baby sitting, and many other things that are only "allowed" for women to perform. during the years, men have formed the concept that they should be tough and aggressive in order to show that they are a "real" man. Stereotyping men can hurt our society because as a community, we are depriving them from performing many other tasks that will benefit us in the long run.

This video is a great example of how stereotypes affect people. The video makes a great point on how society is affecting the was men and women should act. The video shows how they should act from the society's perspective. This stereotypes that both men and women suffer from should not be accepted because it can cause irreversible damage in future.

The Struggle of Being a Woman

Why are women viewed as inferior to men? We are all humans after all. Back in the old days, women did not have any rights; women were only supposed to stay home. Women were not allowed to work, vote, own property, hold public offices and even attend school. Education was not a major goal for women because they were supposed to stay home and men thought they were only used to have kids. It was rare for a women to attend college because they did not have the same advantages a men had since they had to take care of their kids and stay home to do chores. As an example, an article states, "... in 1960, women earned 35.3 percent of undergraduate degrees and only 10 percent of doctoral degrees in the Unites States" (Johnson). This demonstrates that it was rare to see women earn a college degree since they had many obstacles that such as stereotypes. Women had a hard time being accepted by society since they were vulnerable to judgments such as the way they dressed since they were supposed to look decent. As a women, it was hard to become successful back in the old days since they got paid less than men and they were not allowed to receive certain degrees since they were WOMEN. Overall, women were only allowed to do certain things back in the days.

Today, the role of women have changes drastically to the point that they are capable of being self dependent. Wait... What does that mean? Nowadays, the role of women have taken a 360 degree spin; the role of women have expanded. In today's society, college enrollment rate for women have increased because the mentality of many people have changed and women are not limited to just staying home. Women have the capability to be as successful as a men. They can be the main provider of a home without the need to have a men on their side. Having a job and being a mother can be complicated but women are strong enough to handle both situations at the same time. Why should women be viewed as inferior to men if they are capable of working, sustaining their family and being independent. There shouldn't be barriers for women because they have many more responsibilities than a men. In short, women have opened many pathways in their lives in order to become self dependent.

The Importance of Technology in Classrooms

Today technology plays a big role in our daily lives. The new generation is growing up with technology and they are more familiar with it. Innovation is important because things change with time. There has been many dropouts in high school, as mentioned in the video, and its a problem that must be resolved. I think that the lack of technology usage in classrooms is one of the problems that causes students to drop out from school. As time changes, students are more likely to be interested in new things and they find it interesting. It is important for teachers to keep up with students and try to use more technology so students can feel familiar with the classroom and the outside world. The lack of  technology can cause students to lose the interest in school and not pay attention during class. Because of the lack of interest, many students start to get lower grades  and be absent more often. I believe that teachers should try to gain back their students attention by trying to use technology in their classrooms to make their lessons more interesting for students.

The solution to student droop out would be to introduce more technology in classrooms. It would also bring many positives things such as students becoming more involved and participation more in the class. Student would also be able to focus more in the class and benefit more because in today's society, many employers require their employees to know basic computer skills. Technology is also beneficial because it is a new way to look at education from a different perspective that goes beyond traditional learning. It is also a great communication method between students and their teachers, even with their classmates. They would be able to communicate by email, which is more convenient then waiting the next day to talk to the teacher. As an example, right now technology is being used to share my opinion, which is something incredible because it will be shared with many people instead of just a few people. in conclusion,by improving the use of technology in classrooms, it will reduce drop out rates.

Bullying Affects Education

In today's society, there are many problems that affect education, such as bullying. There has been many outcomes due to bullying; however, all the outcomes are negative. Bullying is such a strong word that can change our lives in one second. Not only the victims are being affected, but the person who bullies and the people around them are also being affected. Because bulling is becoming more common, schools are trying to develop prevention methods. Many tragedies have occurred due to bulling. In one article that I read, it stated, "The effects of bullying are so devastating and profound that over the last few years at least 37 state laws against bullying have been adopted". This demonstrates that there has been many issues due to bullying. Its becoming  more common that we hear on the news about a school shooting due to bullying or a victim that committed suicide. It is overwhelming when we hear that students like us are committing suicide because they were tiered of being bullied. Bullying has negative effects such as suicide, shootings, lack of interest in school, depression, feeling unsafe and many more things.

Some causes that lead students to become bullies are violence in their homes, low self esteem or even lack of attention. Not only the victim is being affected, but the student that bullies is affected. Like the article mention that the bullies are more likely to cause fights, use drugs or alcohol. Parents also play an important role in their kids education. I think that parents need to pay more attention to their kids and have conversations about bullying. In a more personal level, I have a little cousin, Kayla, that is in first grade that was being bullied. I used to babysit her in the afternoons when her parents went to work. I always asked her how was she doing in school because she was a really smart girl. One day  I asked her how her day was and her face expression changes and I noticed something was wrong, and she ended up telling me with teas in her eyes that during recess, two boys would push her. Seeing her like that broke my heart, and I told her mom what happened and she went to talk to the teacher to resolve the problem. This is one of the reasons why I believe that communication is important because it can prevent a small situation turn in to a drastic outcome. Overall, bullying is a severe issue that affects education in a negative way.
